<image:title>reading + listening + watching - Sharon Van Etten: Remind Me Tomorrow - Apocalyptic Mom</image:title>
<image:caption>Even if I didn’t love the music on Sharon Van Etten’s fifth record as much as I do, I would still want to look at the album’s cover daily. Taken by her friend Katherine Dieckmann - of the filmmaker’s two children - it mirrors the physical chaos of juggling children and work and life, at least in my experience as a mother-of-four. In its depiction of the uncontained sprawl of children in daily play, the image is a counterpoint to the straight-out-of-a-décor magazine homes inhabited by Kate and Anne in Netflix’s Workin’ Moms that defy the sitcom’s claim to show the realness of being a mother and a worker and a lover. Van Etten – now a mother herself - says she pinned up the photo in the studio while recording Remind Me Tomorrow, an album that reveals her extraordinarily rich songwriting hand. “Before I decided the photo was going to be the cover, I used it as inspiration in the studio,” Van Etten told Vanity Fair. “The joke was ‘Apocalyptic Mom’.” Watch the video for “Jupiter 4” and see why Van Etten’s slow-motion, synth-suffused standout is not coming off repeat anytime soon.</image:caption>

<image:title>reading + listening + watching - Grant & I - Robert Foster’s superb memoir</image:title>
<image:caption>The Go-Betweens might rightly be described as 80s indie sensations on the back cover of this remarkable memoir but Robert Forster’s detailing of the breadline existence of an Australian band in London is essential reading for any southern hemisphere band aiming to have an international career. Of course, as is to be expected from the songwriter who memorably described the music he created with Grant McLennan as “that striped sunlight sound”, Grant & I is about so much more than how to reconcile undiluted critical success with never having enough money to live comfortably. Mostly, it’s the story of an era-defining, three-decade creative collaboration and friendship - and everything that comes with that. To celebrate Foster’s way with words, here’s the unexpectedly fabulous video for The Go-Betweens “Head Full of Steam” - one of the best songs ever written about infatuation.</image:caption>

<image:title>reading + listening + watching - Maggie's Plan - No missteps here</image:title>
<image:caption>If, like me, a romcom is sometimes the only thing that will hit that sweet spot after a long week of contemplating the reversal of things (fortunes, working conditions, hard-won freedoms), then here’s some sweet relief from the usual fare. Even with a director as talented as Rebecca Miller (the only child of Arthur Miller and photographer Inge Morath) and the utterly wonderful Greta Gerwig in the leading role, things could have gone awry in this sort-of love triangle tale. But there are no missteps by Miller and Gerwig and their collaborators which include Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, and Bill Hade. In the end you’ll be rooting for the pickle-maker to be the baby-maker and come away knowing that even a genre as stuck-in-the-mud as the romcom can be delightfully subverted. And, like when you hear this classic Daddy Livingstone song featured in the movie's soundtrack, you’ll watch the credits roll by feeling perfectly content. Watch the trailer here and find it on Netflix.</image:caption>
